In an old car wash in an industrial area in Årsta, the most genuine smoke house in Stockholm is located. Serving up the Texas style barbeque, smoked slowly on low heat for a long time. Owners Ludvig Åström and Niklas Elchazly wanted to create a slice of Texas in their part of heaven, called the diesel valley.

Walking through the gates and into the parking space in front of the old car wash, it is easy to miss the very discrete sign Brisket & Friends in black and white on the white building. The surroundings are far from the most uplifting, located in the middle of an industrial area with highways in every surrounding direction and it is for a good reason the industrial area is referred to as the diesel valley. But when you walk through the door, you forget the bleak surroundings. The smell is the first thing that hits you, it is that lovely smoke smell from hickory wood used to smoke all that meat throughout the night.

The serving is classical Texas style, and done by selling meat by weight. You pick what you want from the items listed on the black board and indicate the grammage you would like from each cut and place your order next to the counter by the big scale. Pick your sides, such as mac’n’cheese, corn bread, potato salad and then you’re good to go. Simple and straight forward. On the opposite side from the counter you will find some pickled onions and other pickles, some white bread and a final green splash of sauce. It is very much do it yourself, and low key – and that goes for the rest of the décor as well. There are a couple of long lines with rough wood tables and wooden bench, communal style, and the plastic utensils offered are placed on the tables. During rush hours, or well most opening hours, it is not uncommon that it is packed – and that for good reason. Because the food is spectacular.

The pork ribs are probably the juiciest east of the US, and lovely paired with a mango sauce. The brisket is of course also a signature dish, and well honestly when it is called Brisket & Friends how could you skip the brisket? Pulled beef, chicken, Texas chili and pulled pork also frequent the menu as well as some additional specials. The menu changes with what is available, and what is of good quality. And quality goes through and through, do not let the outside or the location fool you because the guys here are very focused on getting the right quality in the smoked meat. And doing that at a very good price. Which must be the very best combination there is.
Well worth the trip
As a bonus, Brisket & Friends also has a food truck, so keep a lookout for that one as well if you don’t want to travel to Årsta. And by the way, the food truck was awarded with the street food of the year award at the Fast Food Awards 2017 and the restaurant was awarded with the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter’s Gulddraken in the budget category in 2018. So, all arrows point in the same direction; this is a great place. Well worth the trip.
