A slice of Piedmont on Södermalm

In the northwest of Italy, Piedmont is located. The region is famous for a lot of things, and maybe especially for the bold and flavorsome wines Barolo, Barbera and Barbaresco. And of course Turin and the football club Juventus, nicknamed the old lady, or in Italian La Vecchia Signora. But if you don’t fancy a trip to Turin, the closest way to enjoy the cooking of Piedmont is to head to Södermalm and the rustic Italian bistro called La Vecchia Signora.

There are plenty of restaurants where you expect to be surprised by new cooking techniques, innovative plating and forward-looking cooking. This is not one of those places. On the contrary, what makes La Vecchia Signora a great Italian bistro is exactly the lack of inventiveness that the menu doesn’t change more dramatically than accounting for the seasonal variations of some key produce. The menu is classic Italian with antipasti, pasta, secondi, contorni and dolce. Nothing more and nothing less and the menu is also quite short in each section.

There are a couple of standout dishes on the menu, the vitello tonnato is a great start to a dinner, with veal roast, capers and a tuna mayonnaise. Like many dishes here the flavor is good in all of its traditional simplicity. But the dish that keeps me coming back is one of the pasta dishes which is just spectacular; the Agnolotti al Plin. A type of pasta typical of the Piedmont region with small pieces of flattened pasta dough folded over filling of perfectly cooked ragù and finally pinched (al plin) and served with a fresh sage and melted butter sauce. It really is delicious and it is certainly one of those dishes that is really hard to get tired of. Ever.

During the fall the restaurant also arranges he highly popular truffles week, where an abundance of truffles are shaved on practically every dish. But in order to get a seat during this highly sought after event, the options are quite limited. Basically you need to either get to know the owner, or become a regular at the restaurant and pray to get a ticket.

In essence La Vecchia Signora is a local Italian bistro, nothing more and nothing less. Expect good pasta and some seriously good wines. Do not expect anything extraordinary in terms of innovation or forward-looking cooking. But you will walk away happy.
