It took a bit more than 100 years for Stockholm to get some truly great burger joints, but since the burger hype started a couple of years ago it is a must for every part of the city to have a great burger joint. In Gamla Stan, Barrels Burgers & Beer is the flagship burger joint.

The patties are really juicy, with well-seasoned coarsely ground beef. The original burger is simply called No. 1 and is served with Dijon mustard, ketchup, white onion and cheddar cheese. Simple but damn tasty. And you really don’t need that much more than that and a lightly toasted bun. A lot of different stories surround the origin of the burger, but as a tribute to the original burger, Barrels Burgers & Beers serve an early style burgers called “The Original,” which is basically a plain cheeseburger between two slices of toast. Just like the burger once started. They also have a special burger each month, so no risk of getting tired with the standard assortment. There are French fries as side, topped off with dill or you can go for roasted and salted Haricot Verts.

Located on Stora Nygatan, in the heart of the old town, Barrels Burgers & Beer have kept a bit of the rustic feeling in their decor. The chairs area, yes you guessed it, barrels and the tables are wooden and has a nice rustic feeling. On the downside, the tables are quite closely packed and the chairs, tables and “sofas” in the window are on so different levels that you need to think once and twice about who sits where (hint, place the shortest in the sofa in the window). But those are sort of details, and on the other hand they have spent so much time developing the details around the burger and in the end that is what it’s all about. The bun is also really nice, light and fluffy but not too sweet.
All in all, this is a place where the burgers won’t let you down
The most important thing is still the juicy patty in the middle. And that they do great. It is not too compact, but still holds together nicely. And you can double up any of the burgers for SEK 20. The bun is also really nice, light and fluffy but not too sweet. All in all, this is a place where the burgers won’t let you down. And oh, on a side note there are no reservations. But it’s worth the wait.
