Having the tagline “we have Stockholm’s best value lunch” puts a bit of pressure on Frankes Matbar. But on the other hand, is the tagline really that hard to live up to? So often the daily special served for lunch at many restaurants disappoints you with sloppy execution and honestly not that much love that goes into each plate. But thankfully Frankes Matbar is here to save the day.
Frankes Matbar is here to save the day
Frankes Matbar is something as unique as a restaurant that only focuses on serving quality lunches, and with that focus they are of course only open between 11.15-14.00. The restaurant is located on Malmskillnadsgatan, close to the subway entrance to Hötorget, a bit hidden from people passing by so one could say that it is still a bit of a hidden gem in the City, and it is still very much possible to do a walk-in without a reservation on most days.
The menu changes each week, having one daily special each day and a couple of weekly á la cart options. The main thing with Frankes Matbar is that they cook everything from scratch, utilizing what is in season right now. Both those things are the selling point here, with a third addition that it goes fairly quick. Because lunch is after all lunch, and especially on weekdays that is a good selling point.

The style of the food is quite rustic, with influences from the Nordics and the rest of Europe. On the menu you will find items like veal meatballs, loin of lamb and fish stew. The dishes are well cooked, and you seldom get disappointed with the food and the service is also attentive. More or less all you ask for during lunch. And as a bonus, if you fancy a tiny glass of wine to your lunch they serve a “vino piccolino”, perfect for a better lunch. The prices are quite modest, and are in line with what you will end up paying at most places in the city center, but the quality is for sure better than your average lunch. This is a perfect bistro to become a regular at, and since the food changes often you don’t get bored with it either. But lets get one thing clear, its not that the food will blow you away – but it has another component to it that I value very highly. Consistency. The food is not innovative or experiemntal, it is rater rustic and building on classic dishes, but it is consistently well cooked.

During the summertime, they open up their outdoor dining area as well. And being located on Malmskillnadsgatan you might think that it means that you are sitting close to the street but it does not. The restaurant is located on the corner of a small “roundabout” (which in fact is squared) right next to the entrance to the subway station, which means that there is not much traffic and actually a couple of trees as the main view. Otherwise the restaurant in itself is very much characterized by the large windows that go from floor to ceiling, and the bar at the center of the venue.
One of the best value lunches you will find in the city center
So, does Frankes Matbar live up to their slogan of having Stockholm’s best value lunch? Well, I’m inclined to agree that they at least are one of the best value lunches you will find in the city center.
