A great local bistro

Everyone wants that perfect local bistro. You know, that place around the corner where you can always go for a good, affordable meal in a nice, warm and friendly atmosphere. Well, congratulations to everyone living close to Arbetargatan on Kungsholmen, because all of that you get at Proviant Kungsholmen.

Proviant Kungsholmen is the sister restaurant of Proviant on Sturegatan, and was originally named Café Proviant which probably lead to that a lot of people (myself included) thought that it was a café in the, these days, traditional sense of the word. But the name was actually a reference to the traditional old beer cafes, where people met and drank the home brewed beer. That tradition still stands strong, and the first thing you see when entering the restaurant is a big steel tank where the home brewed beer is being produced. And thankfully the tradition of brewing beer has continued after the name change as well. So you should definitely try out the home brewed, seasonal, beer when visiting the restaurant.

And seasonal is something that runs through everything that you will find at Proviant Kungsholmen. The food is ticking all the boxes when it comes to seasonal, locally sourced etc. But the food that is being produced is just great, hearty food with lots of love. The plating and presentations are beautiful, without being the slightest bit skewed towards the traditional fine dining concept of plating. It is actually not an easy balance to get both the presentation and the flavors right, but for me this is just the perfect comfort food. Hearty, well balanced, seasonal food with a modern twist and take on the traditional ingredients.

The tartar is always a safe bet, and one of the best in town, and the pretzel starter is a classic. But what I would really recommend is to go for whatever the special of the day is. Then you get the most out of your visit, you get that innovative take on the produce that are in season. And what is in season right here and now. For both lunch and dinner, a couple of today’s specials are available and presented on a black board at the table. And these are often the things I love the most. Based on what they have been able to get from their suppliers that specific day, the innovative minds in the kitchen are mixed with some skill in constructing some damn tasty and beautifully presented dishes.

And from that description, you can probably figure out what I think about the restaurant. I love it. And on top of that, they serve one of the best lunches in the city – hands down. Not only on Kungsholmen, but in the entire city. It is often a sorrow to see how the quality of the lunches at many other restaurants differs so much from the evening menu. But for once, that is not the case at Proviant Kungsholmen. So even if you don’t live in the neighborhood, but happen to work in the area – this should be your everyday lunch spot. I know it would be mine if I worked a bit closer. And if you don’t live here or work here, but want to check out a truly great version of a neighborhood bistro, well than steer towards Arbetargatan and Proviant Kungsholmen.
